
Music enhances a child's ability to learn and gives them a means to express themselves. Likewise, literacy enables a child to express themselves through poetry, book and play writing, songwriting and more. They are two of the most important skills a child will ever learn. My dad was a great singer but had a secret passion to play the piano too. He sang in the choir most of his life but the opportunity for piano lessons was not available to him as a child. I have a similar story and I hear this often from other people as well. Too often the musical gifts in our children go undeveloped because we lack the vehicles to nurture them. This scholarship was created to identify and encourage young musicians to develop their gifts early for the Body of Christ. Every singer, whether beginner or seasoned artist, stands on six foundational pillars that sustain the voice and the art. Breath is the engine — without proper diaphragmatic support, nothing else can function with consistency or power. Posture aligns the instrument, freeing the body to channel airflow without tension or restriction. Pitch is the singer's ability to find, match, and sustain accurate tonal center — the difference between a voice that's musical and one that's merely loud. Tone speaks to the quality and resonance of the sound produced, shaped by the singer's ability to find a free, open placement in the body. Diction ensures that language is communicated with clarity, honoring both the text and the listener — especially vital in sacred music, where the word itself carries weight.
